The National Association of Home Builders and McGraw Hill Construction conducted research that found 63 percent of green home owners said lower operating and maintenance costs was the main reason for buying such homes. The survey also found that 85 percent were more satisfied with their new green homes than with their previous, more traditionally built homes.
Green homes include elements such as incorporation of energy-efficient products, attention to resource management and increased water efficiency. Despite the findings, there are still a percentage of buyers who purchased green homes because of environmental concerns and health. Some of the obstacles to green homes gaining more power in the market include consumer awareness, extra costs and fees, and the limited availability of homes.
